Goodfellas was about real gangsters who were active during the 70s and 90s, one of the main person among the gang was Jimmy Conway. James Burke was his real name and he is popular for his other name, Jimmy The Gent. He was associated with the Lucchese crime family, an Italian-American Mafia group. Jimmy was the one to organize the “Lufthansa Heist,” in 1979. This heist was made into US history as one of the major moneymaking heists of all time and most of the participants after the heist ended up dead. Conway belonged of Irish descent so it was impossible for him to become a “made man” among the American Mafia gang. Jimmy was working under Paul Cicero, who was the leader for many major territories during the heists. Jimmy was sentenced to life in 1982 for violating the parole rules and he died of cancer in 1996. At first, he was jailed for his involvement in the Boston College basketball points scandal between 1978-79.

Jimmy Conway - James Burke was born on 5th July 1931. His Irish mother moved him to foster care while he was just two years old. Jimmy was very much involved in organized crimes from his childhood. He started to sell alcohol and other illegal kinds of stuff and also was working as a hitman for his various bosses when he was 16. His interest in stealing made him hijack trucks, steal unattended and untaxed alcohol, and many. He started to earn more when he joined the Paul Cicero gang, a Lucchese crime family. Jimmy hired Henry Hill and Tommy DeVito into his sub-crew. Jimmy was very generous when it came to spending. He gave an enormous amount of tips to the doorman, waiter, etc simply for doing their job. This attitude was admired by Hill and Jimmy was called “Jimmy the Gent.” Jimmy planned and executed his plans with his crew. In 1967 Jimmy arranged the Air France Robbery and the Lufthansa heist in 1978. The Lufthansa heist turned out to be the biggest moneymaking heist in US history. Jimmy was in prison for violating the parole policy and eventually died of cancer in 1996 at the age of 65.

Did Jimmy Conway Get Out Of Prison?

Jimmy was under parole restriction for his involvement in a scandal regarding Boston College basket points shaving. In 1982, Jimmy violated the parole restrictions for which he got arrested. He was sentenced to spend his whole life in prison. On 13, April 1996, at the age of 65, Jimmy Conway died of cancer. So he didn’t make it out of prison. One of the biggest moneymaking heists of all time in the history of the US was organized and carried out by Jimmy Conway. Many Americans would be aware of the Lufthansa heist since it was reported to be the biggest robbery. Jimmy very carefully planned the heist and successfully completed his mission. After the mission’s success, Jimmy had killed most of them who had been involved in the heist to avoid the witness struggle. Jimmy had planned to execute Hill too but Hill managed to escape and became a part of the Witness Protection Program.

Jimmy was serving his time for parole violation and numerous murders in Wende Correctional Facility, New York. While his prison time he developed cancer and passed away on 13, April 1996 at the age of 65. He was treated for his cancer at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo where he died at the center. His parole eligibilty was on 11, March 2004 but he passed away before that. Jimmy Burke, renamed James Conway, was played by Robert De Niro in Martin Scorsese's 1990 film Goodfellas. Burke was portrayed by John Mahoney in the 1991 television film The 10 Million Dollar Getaway, which depicted the Lufthansa Heist. Burke was also portrayed by Donald Sutherland in the 2001 television film The Big Heist. The FBI and NYPD organized crime investigators discovered possible human remains at his former home in 2013. Jimmy's involvement in the Boston College Point Shaving Scandal was discussed in the ESPN 30 for 30 episodes "Playing for the Mob" in October 2014. The documentary is narrated by Ray Liotta, who played Henry Hill in Goodfellas.
