Maui police have identified two of the three people killed in a car crash early Wednesday morning as 81-year-old Lui Williams and 75-year-old Lena Williams, both of Lahaina.

The two were in a gray 2016 Kia Soul that was hit head-on by a gold 2000 Ford Escape that crossed the center line at around 3:08 a.m. on Honoapiilani Highway in Lahaina, police said.

The Escape caught on fire and engulfed the vehicle. Maui Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. Both occupants of the Kia and the driver of the Ford Escape died.

The identity of the Ford Escape driver, a 22-year-old Kihei man, is still being withheld pending positive identification, police said Thursday afternoon.

Maui News Publisher Chris Minford confirmed that Lena Williams was a carrier for the newspaper.

“The Maui News sends our deepest condolences to the Williams’ family and friends,” Minford said in a statement on Thursday. “Lena Williams was an excellent carrier and took great care of her customers on her routes. We are greatly saddened by what occurred. Lena and Lui Williams will be missed by her customers and those of us that knew her at The Maui News.”
